Collingwood is an inner city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and is one of the oldest suburbs of this world renowned city. It was named after Baron Collingwood, a famous British admiral. The suburb is noted for its historical buildings, with many 19th century dwellings, shops and factories still in use, and many buildings listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
The Collingwood Australian Rules Football Club (the Magpies) is the biggest and most famous sporting club in Australia. The Magpies have won 14 VFL/AFL premierships, and have contested more Grand Finals than any other club. Famous Australian author Frank Hardy set the novel Power Without Glory in a fictionalised version of the suburb, named Carringbush.
Transport within Collingwood is mainly via narrow one way streets. The suburb is bounded by four main roads - Smith & Hoddle Streets, Victoria & Alexandra Parades, two of which carry major tramlines. Collingwood is Melbourne's second largest gay village, and a string of gay businesses and venues can be found in the Collingwood / Abbotsford area.
