Magpies Fly Past Young Hawks

THREE quick goals to Collingwood allowed the Magpies to overrun Hawthorn in the last quarter at Shepparton's Deakin Reserve last night.

Collingwood impressed in the 18-point win with Travis Cloke, Ben Reid and Scott Pendlebury kicking two goals each.

But Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson was positive in defeat.

"Both sides were looking for a no-bruise encounter," he said.

"We've got a lot of young blokes playing in the side. We almost had an under-20 forward line there, with Franklin, Roughead, Thorp, Dowler. We've got a lot of work to do as a footy club, we are no means playing our best footy yet.

"But the three-goal margin was the largest of the night, so that was pretty pleasing."

Hawthorn's All-Australian defender Campbell Brown left the field five minutes into the first quarter after landing awkwardly on his right ankle in a marking contest. He sat the rest of the game out with ice strapped to his ankle.

Clarkson said Brown had rolled his ankle and will recover by round two, when he is due to return from suspension.

Brown's injury and Collingwood's ability to get centre clearances was part of the reason for the Magpie forwards taking control of the match, Clarkson said.

Full-forward Lance Franklin kicked three for the Hawks and youngster Cyril Rioli two.

Collingwood got the jump on the Hawks with midfielders Chris Egan and Shane O'Bree dominating the first-half centre clearances and getting the ball quickly to Travis Cloke, whose kicking let him down.

But the Hawks countered in the second quarter, closing the game down by sitting several men behind the play. By half-time, Hawthorn led by a point.

But by the time the final siren sounded, Collingwood had taken control of the corridor with Dane Swan and Dale Thomas playing well.
