Surgery For Moloney

BRENT Moloney is facing surgery on the shoulder he injured against Collingwood on Monday and the likelihood that his season is over, while Jared Rivers will have to wait and see how strained abdominal muscles recover before he knows the full implications of his injury.

The luckless Demon pair have both returned this year after overcoming osteitis pubis.

Moloney has been restricted to 17 games in the past two seasons while Rivers played only three last year.

Moloney will consult a surgeon in the next 48 hours, but Melbourne football operations manager Ross Monaghan admitted yesterday the outlook was not good.

"The most likely outcome is that he will have surgery and that will end his season," said Monaghan.

"The results of his scans were not terrific. He has done some significant damage."

He said the new injury came with cruel timing for Moloney, who joined the Demons from Geelong in 2005. He played 21 games that year, but only a total of 17 in the next two.

For Rivers, the fear is that he may have done more general damage to his groin or stomach muscles, making him vulnerable to a recurrence of osteitis pubis.
