A Dose Of The Blues For Easter

? Phoenix is one of Gig Guide's favourite acts on the blues circuit. With a repertoire that covers the traditional blues of Muddy Waters, Elmore James and the rest as well as a nod towards Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the band is a bona fide crowd pleaser that can keep both rock and blues fans on the dance floor. This Saturday night Phoenix will be playing at The Glasshouse (51 Gipps Street, Collingwood) from 8.30pm together with very special guest Jimi "The Human" Hocking.
? The Black Swans of Trespass are a band that Gig Guide has been keeping a very close eye on over the last few years. Led by idiosyncratic banjo player C.C. Thornley backed by an ever-changing roster of hired musicians the band blazes its own trail on alien waters blurring the lines between bluegrass, blues, funk and a sound that I would like to call "Americana" if only it didn't sound so stubbornly Australian. You can catch the band playing this Sunday at the Lomond Hotel from 6 pm offering the perfect remedy for a day of chocolate eggs and forced family interaction.? The Grand Wazoo is more than just a band - it's an institution. Having played the very best in soul, funk and R&B for 27 years (and counting!) the band is pleased to have found itself a new Sunday evening residency at the Blue Diamond Club situated on the 15th floor at 123 Queen Street, Melbourne. The action begins this Sunday from 6pm.? Saxophonist Ned Goold is best known for his regular seat in Harry Connick Jnr's band but is also known in jazz circles for his adventurous shows with his own band. A stubborn individualist, Ned has developed his own system of bop soloing based on the 12-tone system that mercilessly deconstructs the bebop tradition. You can catch Goold and his band this Tuesday at Bennetts Lane. -- Matthew Frederick mfrederick@theage.com.au Phone 9604 1665.
