Afl Now Happy With Sydney Stadium's Surface

THE AFL is satisfied with the standard of the playing surface at Sydney's ANZ Stadium, which was the subject of criticism when Collingwood played Sydney there in round 14.

That night, the surface was loose and shifted to cause massive divots, one in particular when Travis Cloke dived to take a low mark and almost found himself sinking.

Geelong informally raised concerns with the AFL following that match, as did Collingwood after a number of their players complained to club officials about the shifting surface making it difficult to kick for goal.

The league has since demanded the ground's curators conduct urgent maintenance and turf replacement.

An AFL spokesman said yesterday the league had "no issue" with the surface. "Last time, the surface wasn't up to the standard that we'd hoped, but we're satisfied now and have no issue with it," he said. -- LYALL JOHNSON
